Two cigarette trade cards (of 50) issued in 1888 by Wm. S. Kimball & Co. The whole series is titled “Savage and Semi-Barbarous Chiefs and Rulers”
These portraits of “Mtesa, Emperor of Uganda” and “Chambarango, Chief of Uganda” are derived from an engraving based on the photograph produced in 1875 by Hnery Morton Stanley or someone in his caravan.
These two cards are part of the HIPUganda collection.
For the whole series see the online collection of the Met Museum.
