A side-by-side tells the story of Uganda Asians. On the left the dukawalla, all smiles for the camera, on the right the coffee merchant – the 95%-5% divide in the Uganda Asian community. I make a point that we were 1% of the population but garnered 66% of the nonfood GDP. Truth to tell, within the Asian community just 25 or so families owned 80% of the Asian wealth. They were the estate owners – sugar, tea and coffee – crop processors – ginners, coffee curers – 4-5 direct importers of textiles, transporters (trucks, buses and ferries), and the professionals.”
